2014 Trip to ChinaPosted June 04 2014
Shine Wellness CFO and Licensed Acupuncturist, Tian Wu, attended the 2nd China International Expo of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Botanical Drugs in Shanghai, China in May 2014.
The expo has a strong interest in promoting Traditional Chinese Medicine around the world, and features the latest and greatest technologies and herbal remedies. We will be importing several new products that were featured at the expo and are expecting their arrival in July.
While in China, Tian also visited an organic mugwort farm. Mugwort is a staple herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In fact, the Chinese word for acupuncture is "Zhen Jiu" which means "needle" and "burning". "Burning" refers to a common Traditional Chinese Medicine practice known as Moxibustion. Moxibustion is a process where "Moxa", or dried, compressed, incense-like sticks of mugwort leaves, are burned to generate heat, much like an all natural heating pad. Moxibustion can be direct or indirect. When moxa is applied directly to the skin at an acupuncture point, this is direct. When an acupuncturist lights a compressed stick of moxa and holds it close to the skin, this is indirect. Indirect moxibustion can also be done by placing moxa sticks in a moxa box, which allows the moxa to burn and warm the area without anyone holding it there. Tian Wu uses smoke-less moxa and moxa boxes at her clinic, Tian Chao Herbs and Acupuncture.
